Tag: Good/Bad Experiences with Food

This has been long overdue. I've been tagged by Prema of My Cook Book for this meme.

(Added on 10/31/06: Warning! The following paragraph contains an inordinately indelicate "bad" experience which may make reader swear off Biryani and/or Bangalore restaurants forever. Reader discretion advised!)

(Edited to lessen the gross factor) My most disgusting experience with food has been in a small restaurant in Bangalore that specialized in Biryani. They made the tastiest Muslim style Biryani ever! My colleagues and I would go there at least once a month to get our fix. This one time, a friend of mine found a long strand of hair in the middle of her biryani (yech!) and informed the waiter who served us. He came over, leaned over her plate, pulled out the errant strand and walked away, expecting her to continue eating! Needless to say, we left in a hurry & never set foot in that restaurant again! I don't want to think about other possible embellishments that went into the biryani to make it taste as good as it did!

Sorry, guys! I know this one is pretty gross!!
(Hey, I warned you!!)

I'd like to tag Jayshree of Veggie Delight for this meme.

Thanks a lot all of you!! I'm due to visit home (Calcutta) after two whole years and it's brought back memories of all sorts of rubbish that keopt appearing in restaurant food while I lived there.

Insects, hair from the head, pubes (you better believe me).

Thank God I've just finished eating...

Vani said...

Eeewww! Sorry to being back memories that are best forgotten!!
Have a great trip, Mallika! Calcutta- ooh, the singada, matki chai, mishti doi... yum! But don't inspect food too closely! ;)

Oh you people are lucky, you got only a strand of hair. My husband and myself went to Upahara Darshini in Bangalore for breakfast once. We finished eating breakfast and were drinking coffee, when the guy standing next to us was analysing what was in his plate. He asked us to take a look at what it was and it was half of cockroach (the rear portion) in the sambar. Just a few minutes back, we also had eaten the same sambar. Imagine what would have happened to us. God that was the last visit to that restaurant. You also should watch a programme called Kitchen nightmares. There was a serial about an Indian restaraunt (Purnima Restaurant) in New York where they were serving rotten food (literally). I am sure that post is available somewhere on the Net ... maybe you can search. Believe me it makes me think that I am a great cook everyday (though I am learning only recently) ... because I know exactly what I am putting into the food and what is going into my stomach. Such horrors ... they can never be forgotten.

Aaroo- yeah, a cockroach definitely beats hair! Eeew! You're right- good or not-so-good, with home food you at least know what you are eating (or not eating!)
