Little M started with her daycare a few weeks ago. I found this wonderful lady who takes care of M in her house during the day. The fact that she wears spectacles (both my mom & mil do) seemed to help because M took to her immediately and the one time when my mil did not wear specs, M refused to go to her! M is able to sit up and play now. She tries to stand at every opportunity and if held by hand, tries to walk too, with the widest smile on her face!
End of baby update and on to some Kannadiga food now! Here is a recipe for one of my favourite curries, the gojju. Gojjus are usually coconut based curries with jaggery and tamarind, made with some particular vegetables and fruits. Their tangy yet mildly sweet flavour makes them a good accompaniment to rice, rotis and even bread. Bendekai (Bhindi) gojju is my all time favorite. Green pepper and onion gojju comes a close second. This recipe here is a variation of the latter, with the addition of eggplants.

Ingredients:
Eggplants - 7-8 small cut into pieces
Green peppers - 2 chopped
Onion - 1 medium, chopped
Jaggery - 1 Tbsp
Water - 1 cup
Salt to taste
Tadka:
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp
Oil - 1 Tbsp
Asafoetida (hing) - a pinch
Grind:
Sesame seeds- 1 tsp roasted
Coconut - 1/2 cup (fresh shredded or powder)
Tamarind paste - 1 tsp
Sambar Powder/Madras Curry Powder - 1 tsp
Green chillies- 3
Rice or Dalia - 1 tsp
Method:
In a pan, do the tadka. Add the vegetables and fry for a few minutes. Add salt and water. Cook covered until the vegetables are cooked. Add the ground masala and bring to a boil. Add jaggery. Add more salt or sambar powder, if required.

Hi Vani
So good to see you and hear about little M. Is she going to a home daycare ? Good that she has taken to her
I know life can be real hectic and it so nice of you that you still come around to blogosphere
Lovely Gojju, the name itself is new for me :)
Hi Vani, glad to hear things are going so well, if busy, for you :) Thanks for sharing this recipe -- gojjus are new to me and I really need to try -- sounds great!
Vani, glad to hear all are doing fine and just BUSY has kept you away from blogging. Nothing like having a good babysitter. It is hard in the beginning but things start to settle down soon.
Tasty and easy to make Gojju.
So nice to read an update from you...Little Gudiya is adjusting well...that's a bit of a relief, isn't it? Many hugs for her!
Eggplant with sesame and tamarind sounds delicious! So much better than just our plain Gujju style curry. Must make this with some potatoes added in it too..
take care,
trupti
About time lady!;D

gojju looks really good...and that too badane...yum yummmy...
I just love eggplant (aubergine) in all types of cooking, Indian or not. In fact I just ate a brinjal bajee (not sure of the spelling) last night.
Vani, welcome back. I'm glad that it is settling down for you. The eggplant and pepper gojju looks delicious. Thanks for sharing.
Vani,
So our little angel goes to day care now and love to walk when held. How cute!!!! Loads of hugs from this Seema aunt to her. Love badane gojju.
great to hear from you vani...... and good to hear you are settling down after your in-laws have left.....
I have always wondered what a gojju means....... now I know!!!!!!!! :)
I distinctly remember tasting Gojju at a friends place. They hail from Kumta, a place, along with Sirsi that I usually associate with Gojju. I haven't come across this preparation as much in say North Karnataka, not even South. Is it more prevalent along the coast, more specifically Kumta, Sirsi side?
It's a great dish though.
Hi Sandeepa- All's well with M's new daycare life! :) She has taken to the lady very well. I visit the food blogosphere at every opp I get, which I must say has not been that much lately! But I have caught up with all my pals' latest posts! Loved your chicken casserole, S! :)
Linda- just saw your masala dosa entry for jihva! How lovely that u made it from scratch! It looks yummy, especially the masala part! :) Yeah, life's been hectic but in a good way (I like to think!).
ISG- I'm waiting for things to settle down and get easier! It's not been too bad though, thankfully. N is helping with things and that does make it a little easier.
Trupti- Gudiya is doing well, touch wood! :) Do try the gojju. We make gojjus out of many veggies and fruits but not aloo, for some reason. Hmm.. I think I should try that out! :)
Asha- M has definitely grown tall but not chubby. Looks like she will be lean and mean! :) She is doing well and clings to me like a.. well, a clingwrap! N gets annoyed but she is a Momma's girl (for now at least!)
Sup- you love badane too, huh? :) Do try it sometime. M will be a walker soon, hopefully. Though people say now is the better time because she is not moving around and pulling down stuff:)
Scott- Wow! For the brinjal bhaji. Did you make it?! If so, I want the recipe!! :)
Mandira- thanks! Yup, things are settling down and all's well at the home & baby front! Hope you are doing well.
Coffee- Things are going well after the in-laws have left. Baby is doing good, which was my main worry. I hope you're back to your routine after the India trip. Glad I answered the "what on earth is gojju?" question! :)
Seema- yeah, the little angel loves to walk! Well, wobble is more like it! Will pass on your hugs :)
Anil P- hi! and welcome to my blog! Just had a quick look at your blog and it is very interesting! I'll be back to read more! Gojju is a Kannadiga curry that has many variations. It's common in the Bangalore/Mysore regions but may be called by different names in the coastal regions. My FIL, who is from Mangalore calls it 'puli koddel'.
Hi Vani, You have got a nice blog with interesting recipes.I liked the gojju a lot.
cheers
sharmi
